I have just returned from NANPA, the North American Nature Photography Association, in Portland, Oregon. This is an organization comprised of 2000 members, many of whom are some of the world’s most outstanding nature photographers and industry professionals. Although I was there to network with photographers and colleagues, one of the highlights for me was to see both Russ Kinne and Ann Guifoyle awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Many of you will know of Ann Guifoyle through her tireless efforts with the Guifoyle Report, Greenbook, Bluebook, AG Editions and most recently Agpix. Russ is of course an outstanding nature photographer and he and his wife Jane, are both an inspiration to anyone who has ever met them!
I love going to these conferences because I always return with wonderful new talent for the agency. This is the place where true nature photographers come out of the bush to find out what’s going on in the real world and party with old friends. It’s hard for me to walk down the corridors because many photographers are eager to ask me questions, which of course I’m always happy to answer. I spoke on a panel regarding International Marketing and reviewed portfolios of photographers. Once again I offered myself up for auction during the “Buy a Pro for an Hour” session, bringing in $400 to the student scholarship program, which is a wonderful high school program if you know any budding young photographers. I also met with over 25 of our photographers and discussed the latest in digital delivery, as well as what subjects they should be shooting that are hard for researchers to find.
