ANWR—Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
.

Since oil and gas is so much in the news, I thought it would be timely to feature some of the pristine beauty of ANWR. Drilling for oil in the Refuge is such a controversial subject. As we know, many people are unaware of the diversity of species there, so I thought I’d give you a little show and tell from some of my photographers who have spent time in this remote wilderness. When I attended the 8th World Wilderness Congress in Anchorage last October, it was interesting to hear from tribal leaders about the sacred caribou birthing grounds and how that is where the supporters of drilling for oil in Alaska want to drill.

The tribal leader said that land is sacred to all their people and that the caribou might never again venture there during the birthing season. Interesting as well, other leaders spoke of global warming and its effects in Northern Alaska. Now many of the young calves are drowning in the rivers when they migrate—what once were frozen rivers for them to cross have now been thawing early and thus, it’s a hard swim for the young calves trying to keep up with the herd. We have many more ANWR images on the site. If any of you are working on projects that need photos of the area, you’ll now know where to come! Enjoy!
